What is Health and Wellness Coaching?

Health and Wellness Coaching is a recent discipline that has evolved due to a growing need within our lives. The role can vary and is flexible to suit the clients’ needs however as a general rule, Health and Wellness Coaching is a client-focused, collaborative process whose primary goal is to support their clients with sustainable lifestyle changes that improve their quality of life.

By commencing with a baseline evaluation of their life in 8 sectors, the client determines the goals whilst being guided by the Health and Wellness Coach allowing the client to be the expert in their own life. The coach then brings their knowledge, skills and facilitation techniques to support the change process and guide accountability within the client.

A coach provides the client with strategies and perspectives to help the untapped valuable potential of the individual. Coaches do not provide answers to problems directly but instead, they offer the client the opportunity to explore the issue and arrive at a viable solution through guidance.

So that is the big picture behind the coaching industry, and it is useful to understand the difference between a Wellness Coach versus a Health Coach. A Wellness Coach and a Health Coach share the same concept and principles when coaching sessions are facilitated. They help the client to identify the issue, to determine the root cause, identify factors that affect their success, and the potential solutions that could be taken to gain control over the issue. Together, the coach and the client design a plan that will effectively lead to success. This means that both a Wellness Coach and a Health Coach establish a clear partnership with the client to work on well-defined goals.

A Wellness Coach addresses personal elements that contribute to healthy living. The main objective of wellness coaching is to guide the client to effectively create and adopt strategies that will improve all aspects of their life. A Wellness Coach focuses on four areas: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. While the client often has specific goals, the Wellness Coach typically will address the client’s lifestyle more holistically. The primary goal is to help clients embrace a positive lifestyle and make behaviour changes to support their goals. This sets wellness coaching apart from other health professionals.

A Health Coach assists the client to establish long-term physical fitness and health with the objective to provide guidance and general assistance for the client to effectively come up with strategies that will improve all aspects of their life. A Health Coach helps clients modify unhealthy behaviours and provides them with strategies that will get them moving away from living an inactive or sedentary life. The number one priority of a Health Coach is to foster habit change that corresponds to a healthy lifestyle.

A Health and Wellness Coach embraces all these key areas ensuring a holistic approach to overall wellbeing, for short- and long-term success.

The main difference between a Health and Wellness Coach and other health and lifestyle professionals is the collaboration through facilitation, which differs to a more directive approach enabling the client to be responsible for their own actions towards sustainable improvement. The relationship between coach and client will always be respectful, honest, confidential and inspirational, honouring the client’s independence and unique set of values.

Meet your coach

Hi, my name is Sue Broughton. I have spent the last 40 years as a Businesswoman, Coach, Healing Therapist, Educator and Entrepreneur. Shift the highlighted content to a new page I have worked hands-on with thousands of people from many different industries while continuing to learn and develop my own skills. My fascination for helping people and my passion for business started at a young age. Life is a journey, and we all have stuff that happens to us, or put another way, FOR us to learn. Having a very destructive upbringing, I learnt early that the people you love may not treat you right and have a different idea to you about what love, care and attention is. In an era when domestic physical discipline was the accepted norm to deal with children, a lot of parents were not equipped with the psychology on how to raise children appropriately.

FAQs

Health and Wellness Coaching Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is health and wellness coaching?

Health and Wellness coaches help clients make positive and lasting changes to their own personal health. The coach guides clients through the process of creating a vision for their health and well-being, developing a healthy mindset and habits, and empowering the client every step of the way until they accomplish their goals.

Who would benefit from coaching?

Adults or late adolescents who are contemplating a change in their life who have not been successful in sustained change.

How long should I work with a coach?
In areas of wellness and healthy living, I have found that three to six months is an ideal time frame for working with the consistent support of a coach to experience transformative goal setting and lifestyle changes.
How is Health and Wellness coaching different from therapy or a nutritionist?
Wellness Coaching is not about focusing necessarily on understanding experiences in your past or why you may be stuck as you might explore in some therapy work. It is, instead, more present, future and action oriented. The key focus of Wellness Coaching is to help you notice what IS working in your life and help you leverage your strengths to create possibilities and positive changes for your future.
I am afraid to talk about personal things... What should I do?
As a professional in the health and wellness coaching sector, it is critical for me to keep everything confidential for each and every client I see. I discuss all the logistics upfront to make sure you are comfortable with the process, and the ongoing confidentially. You can rest assured knowing that you will be heard without judgment. I “hold space” for you so you can feel free and safe to be real and honest. I bring my full attention to our time together so that I can really listen to what’s being said, as well as what’s not being said, understand and reflect, harness your strengths, remind you of your core values, challenge you, and ask the right questions that are going to help you determine what you need to do so that you can move toward the person YOU want to be, not the person that anyone else thinks you should be, including me!
How is coaching done and where?
Coaching can happen at a designated meeting place, or it can be equally valuable through phone calling, or a video chat like Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. You don’t need to be local to work with me as your Health and Wellness Coach. Whatever works for you!
Do you give advice?

I am trained to guide you toward your own decision making and what is important for you. Through powerful questioning, you will find your own journey toward your goals. We become partners during this process as I will help guide you through what is most important for you, and you will continue to be in the driver’s seat and in control of where you are going.

What do you mean when you say you don’t prescribe anything to your clients?
I believe that I am NOT the expert in my client’s life, rather each individual is an expert in their own life. For this reason, I don’t give advice or tell my clients what they need to do. I am not a consultant or therapist during these sessions, I am a coach. This means that I allow YOU to take control of the wheel as we work to bring out the best in you. If I have a suggestion or recommendation, I will always ask your permission first.
Sounds great! I’m ready to get started, what do I do next?
If you are ready, willing, and able to make a healthy change, I would love to help you get your TRANSFORMATION started. Please schedule a time to talk with me during my available hours on the calendar on the website. If none of those times work for you, send me your availability to sue@loveandgratitude.com.au If you have any further questions for me, don’t hesitate to contact me and I will get back to you shortly.

Having worked in Australia, Asia, Africa, UK and the US, has exposed me to many different philosophies and cultures on how to manage life issues.I have experience in diverse industries such as telecommunications, construction, recruitment, hospitality, tourism, education, book publishing and entrepreneurship. I have worked with people from every walk of life and at every level from the humblest being to the very wealthy. Techniques

Coaching techniques are practices and strategies that your Health and Wellness Coach use to help their clients learn new skills and achieve goals. Successful coaching techniques develop trust between the coach and their client, encourage open communication and motivate the client to learn and develop. In using coaching techniques, I can provide an outside perspective that my clients can use to make personal improvements. The techniques can vary depending on the coach’s strengths and the learning styles of the clients. The type of techniques that I use have been proven to be highly successful starting with setting SMART Goals (they are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based), asking guiding questions, using a positive approach, being supportive so your personal confidence grows, being empathetic, setting expectations for the period, looking for ‘Aha’ moments that we can learn from, follow up on each action and invest in personal development. By using proven techniques, you are setting the foundation to succeed and ensure a sustainable transformation for the better.

Coaching Style

Coaching leaders use one or more of the different recognised coaching styles. They are Democratic, Authoritarian, Holistic, Autocratic and Vision Coaching. My style is a combination of Holistic and Vision Coaching. What this means to you is that I have a belief that everything is connected, this approach theorises that an individual is a sum of all their parts: in order to encourage growth in your life, balance needs to be achieved in all aspects of their life.We shine a spotlight on personal stumbling blocks and repetitive behaviours that might be negatively affecting your life, as well as offering solutions like stress management, and relaxation techniques. This type of coaching style can take a little time to achieve results, and there’s the possibility that deeper, emotional problems may be triggered during the process. I encourage and empower my clients by giving them clear direction and strategies for achieving objectives and encouraging focus. This approach feels like a partnership and draws on elements of feedback, reflection, and conversation to really motivate and influence you, the client. Change can be difficult and requires commitment. As a client, you need to be willing to put in the work, whilst you are guided to become the very best person you can be.
